First-night camp checklist that never fails
The first night sets the tone for the whole trip. Pack a reliable shelter, a sleep system rated colder than the forecast, and a stove that lights on the first try.
Keep headlamps charged, stash a rain shell near the top of the pack, and stage dinner ingredients before dark. Small habits keep the campsite enjoyable.
If you are shopping for a starter kit, begin with a 2-person tent, a 20-degree bag, a compact stove, and a filter bottle. Summittail stocks each of those building blocks.
